Health hazards caused to Domestic Workers – Maids
Domestic work refers to house work such as, Sweeping, Cleaning, Washing clothes, Cooking, Caring of children & such other work which is carried out for an employer for remuneration. Here we are concentrating on the domestic workers who carry out activities such as; cleaning utensils, sweeping & mopping. Low back pain is the major problem faced by the domestic workers. Now we would consider the wrong postures of the Domestic workers to avoid the problems such as ‘Low back pain.’
Low back pain is relatively uncommon before the age of 20 but then there is a steady increase in the prevalence until the age of 65. The prevalence of degenerative changes in the lumbar spine increases with increasing age causing Low back pain. Posture is the position of the body while carrying out various activities. Extreme bending, Overstressing on the back, rotation of spine + bending are dangerous postures. With the use of proper tool while working, if the posture is corrected at the right age one can avoid further consequences like Low Back Pain which is a cumulative trauma disorder (CTD). Further enhancing the work efficiency of the domestic workers and causing less harm.
